How to Grow Pomegranate From Seed

  • Choose a big-size, healthy pomegranate fruit.
  • Cut the fruit to get the seeds out.
  • Now, gently crush the seeds to remove all the juice and pulp. (Make sure not to harm the seed)
  • After crushing, wash the seeds thoroughly and strain the water. Now keep them aside in semi-shaded areas away from direct sunlight.
  • After 4 – 5 days, your seeds are ready to be sowed.

Additional Tip : To fast forward the germinatioin process you can soak the seeds in Hydrogen Peroxide Solution for Overnight (10 – 12 hours ) and then sow them directly in the soil. For soaking the seeds use 12%  concentration hydrogen peroxide solution and follow the procedure below:

  • Take 1 cup of water (medium sized cup) and add 1 and  1/2 teaspoon OR 7 – 10 drops of 12% hydrogen peroxide solution.
  • Soak the seeds in the solution for 10 – 12 hours.

Soaking the seeds in the hydrogen peroxide boosts the germination process and enhaces the seedling growth.

For pomegranate seeds, the soil mix should be in the ratio of 5:3:2 (i.e. 50% Normal Garden Soil, 30% Organic Compost or Vermi Compost or Decomposed Cow Dung, 20% Coco Peat or Coco Coir). The above soil mix is the best for pomegranate seed and gives the highest seed germination rate.

3. Growing Pomegranate From Seed

Once your seeds and potting mix is prepared, you are ready to plant the seeds. It is always better to plant the seeds in a small container or a seed growing tray rather than putting them directly in the garden for better germination rate. image for sowing seeds

Follow the step to plant the seed -:

  • First, make sure your pot or seed tray has a good drainage hole at the bottom.
  • Fill the pot or seed tray with the potting soil (Keep it a little empty from the top)
  • Make a hole 1Inch deep in the center and put the seed (Put one is in one hole)
  • Now cover the seed with the potting mix and press the soil gently so that it gets fixed and the seed does not move while watering.
  • Water the seed thoroughly, but do not flood the pot.

Note – If your pot has a large diameter, then sow the seed at a distance of 2 inches from each other.

After watering, keep the pot or seed tray in a semi-shaded area, and add little water only when the soil feels dry to touch. After 7 – 10 days, your pants will have visible growth.

Once the seedlings are 2 Inches tall or after 30 – 40 days, your seedlings are ready to be transplanted in a bigger container or directly in the garden. While shifting the seeding, make sure not to harm the plant root system and keep the root ball intact. After successfully shifting the plant, keep it away from direct sunlight for 2 days to avoid any transplant shock.

The Pomegranate plant starts flowering and fruiting once it is 3 – 4 years old.
